Tonight bear 🐻 is here to try the set menu for 2 ($28++) plus some dishes from the buffet menu.

Starting with appetiser tofu. The appetisers comes out pipping hot with smoke , which is what bear likes. Bear likes hot appetisers.

The Chy Poh (Preserved Turnip) Omelette is soft and fluffy. Not too saltish but yet can taste the Chy Poh .

We choose Goldleaf's signature dish the Braised Pork Belly with Preseved Vegetables. This is one of 🐻's Favourite for tonight's tasting. Usually at other places that serves this. The lean part are too tough and the fat part already melted. At Goldleaf there's a balance. The lean pork is just right and the fat part is not soft till "nua" but still melts in your mouth.
A simple dish but yet not so simple, as you need to have many years experience to get it right.

Goldleaf prawn roll is another must try item from this restaurant. Wrapped fresh daily using the freshest ingredients.

Love my porridge with lots of golden orange sweet potatoes 🍠. Bear 🐻 likes to meshed the potatoes and blend with the porridge. Hot , smooth porridge porridge is comfort food for bear.

Bear also tried the olive fried rice which was full of "wok hei" and very delicious.

This is the best steam pork Patty with salted egg yolk bear ever tasted. The meat patty is smooth and chewy. It is chewy and yet you don't feel the rough grains of minced pork. Salted egg yolk is also the best ever tasted. It is not dry like those in the mooncake. Moist and Flavourful. Excellent traditional home cooked dish which requires lots of skill to make it that good.

Taiwanese lettuce. This may not look very Instagram worthy but it is really good. Bear is not a vegetable person and initially have no intention of tasting this . But after one bite. Bear finished the whole plate. Delicious beyond description. You have to try it for yourself.

For dessert 🐻 tried the yam paste with ginkgo nuts.

And herbal Jelly with honey.

Starting from 2 December, Goldleaf will be open till 2:30am every Friday and Saturday and will be offering 15% off ala crate menu. Good for late night supper after parties or clubbing or anyone who is hungry and wanted some comfort food at this hour.

About Goldleaf (Katong) Taiwan Porridge:

Goldleaf was founded in 1971 along Orchard Road, alongside icons of old such as the Mariott (Dynasty) Hotel, Lido and Orchard Theatre.

Instantly recognizable as the restaurant with the red doors, Goldleaf was famous for incredible Taiwanese porridge and dishes. People often held banquets in the restaurant and in the wee hours of the morning, after concerts and movies, youths flocked to Goldleaf for supper and to hopefully catch a glimpse of their favorite celebrities such as Theresa Teng, who frequented the restaurant.

However, as Singapore modernized and the government began reclaiming Orchard Road, Goldleaf was forced to relocate in the 90s, first to Orchard Point then to Tanjong Pagar. The customers who’d known and loved the restaurant followed the owners to their new locations and business soon picked up again.

In 1988, Goldleaf settled in its current location along the nostalgic Amoy Street, and is proud to have recently opened a second outlet at Katong Square. Today, the restaurant still prides itself on quality and consistency, using the same recipes as it did 45 years ago. Goldleaf aims to not just allow the older generation to relive their past, but also to reintroduce youths to the taste of their parents’ memories, and to be able to serve food synonymous with comfort.

With a history dating back to 1971, Goldleaf prides itself on serving authentic, comforting Chinese food. The restaurant specialises in steamy bowls of porridge and each dish is whipped up using traditional recipes. Goldleaf’s newly opened second outlet at Katong Square presents its signature Chinese dishes against the backdrop of the newly restored, historically significant former Joo Chiat Police Station.

Today, Goldleaf is excited to unveil its second outlet at Katong Square. The sleek white walls of the newly-restored heritage building bring back a glimpse of Goldleaf's former glory and provide the perfect backdrop to its familial dishes. Every now and then, a passer-by stumbles into Goldleaf and exclaims that he remembers dining with us as a child. To such customers, Goldleaf brings a sense of nostalgia from the good old days. For us, we're just pleased that the legacy of our dishes have stood the test of time.
